This volume contains contributions to the conference Cent ans d'études scandinaves (Hundred years of Scandinavian studies. Commemoration of the inauguration of the chair of Scandinavian languages and literatures at the Sorbonne University in 1909), held in Paris in 2009.

After a comprehensive preface by Professors Briens and Maillefer, the general history of Scandinavian studies at the Sorbonne is outlined by Professors Battail, Boyer and Maillefer. Other authors treat specific themes in Scandinavian literature, culture, history, and languages. Professor Maillefer further provides complete bibliographies of the founding fathers of Scandinavian studies at the Sorbonne, as well as a list of all holders of the Chair in the discipline. François Émion presents a comprehensive overview of doctoral dissertations on Scandinavian studies defended at French universities. The history and activities of Scandinavian lecturers at the Sorbonne are described in four specific chapters, and Christine Guihard gives a personal portrait of her father, Professor Maurice Gravier, one of the pioneering scholars of Scandinavian studies at the Sorbonne.
