(The landscape of Astrid Lindgren - How landscape heritage is changing, interpreted and managed.)
In several of Astrid Lindgren's books and films the landscape of the province of Småland plays a central part. The image of this rural landscape and small towns from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century is shared by many.
This volume is a collection of revised versions of papers presented by participants at a symposium arranged in 2007 in Vimmerby, Småland, to mark the centennial of the birth of Astrid Lindgren. The symposium addressed the question of cultural landscape change from five different perspectives: the effect of policies; agribusiness; the future; history and heritage; and the production of experiences.
The first three perspectives attempt to present forces of change and what we may expect. The latter two deal with the production of knowledge regarding historic landscapes and how this can be interpreted and used in tourism development focusing on experiences.
However, landscapes can only to a limited extent be preserved. Books and films have created both imagined and real pictures of the cultural landscape of Småland. Tourism developers can benefit from this but have to understand the potential that lies in interpreting the landscape on the basis of research.
